Foam Density and Selection Guide

Choosing the right foam ensures lasting comfort and client satisfaction. This guide covers the key factors.

Foam density basics:

  • 1.5 lb density: Economy, light-use furniture, back cushions
  • 1.8 lb density: Standard residential, everyday chairs and sofas
  • 2.5 lb density: High-quality residential, heavy daily use
  • 2.8+ lb density: Commercial and institutional seating

  • Density vs firmness:

Density (weight per cubic foot) determines durability. Firmness (ILD rating) determines how the foam feels. High-density foam can be soft or firm — they are independent properties.

When to use HR (High-Resilience) foam:

  • Family room sofas with daily heavy use
  • Commercial seating (restaurants, hotels, waiting rooms)
  • Any piece where the client expects 10+ years of life

  • Dacron wrap:

Wrapping foam in 1-inch Dacron batting softens the feel, rounds cushion edges, and helps fabric slide on during installation. Recommended for all visible cushions.

    Thickness guidelines:

  • Seat cushions: 4-5 inches standard, 5-6 inches for deep seats
  • Back cushions: 3-4 inches
  • Arm padding: 1-2 inches
  • Remember that foam compresses 10-20% under body weight over time
